Verifying your identity as a new freelancer

Ensuring a safe community for everyone is a top priority at Fiverr. To facilitate secure business practices, we require freelancers to verify their identity. This process helps us build a trusted marketplace and protects your account from unauthorized access.

Overview

Identity verification helps keep the Fiverr marketplace trustworthy and secure. Completing these steps may be required to publish your Gigs in the Fiverr Catalog. Some new freelancers may also be required to pay a one time fee to complete ID verification. This fee covers the cost of verifying your identity through our verification partner. If you're enrolled in Seller Plus Kickstart, ID verification is included as part of your membership at no extra cost.

Verification covers three areas:

  • Business verification: Providing information about your professional status to comply with global regulations, including the EU Digital Services Act (DSA).
  • Phone verification: Linking a valid phone number to your account for added security.
  • ID verification: Confirming your identity with a government-issued document.

New freelancers may be required to complete these steps before their Gigs can be added to the Fiverr Catalog.

Before you begin

To ensure a smooth process, please have the following ready:

  • A computer: Use a desktop or laptop to log in and start the process.
  • A smartphone: You will need a smartphone with a working camera to take photos of your ID and a selfie.
  • Working phone number: Google Voice and similar VOIP services are not supported. If you don't have a mobile phone, you can verify your account via an SMS-enabled landline or by receiving a call.
  • Original ID: Have your physical government-issued document (e.g., passport, driver's license, or ID card) ready. Digital copies or screenshots are not accepted.
  • Valid documents: Ensure your documents are current and not expired.
  • Stable connection: Disable any VPN or proxy settings before starting, as these may interfere with the process.
  • Device permissions: Ensure your smartphone browser has permission to access your camera.

Understanding the verification process

The verification process follows a specific sequence. You can track your progress on your Talent Dashboard. To access it, navigate to your Talent Dashboard by clicking on "Dashboard" from your freelancer profile.

The verification task remains locked and cannot be initiated until you publish your first Gig.

  1. Enter your country and phone number.
  2. Click Verify by text.
  3. Enter the code received.
  4. Add a security question: This is essential for account recovery.

Keep in mind that verification attempts are limited.

2. Personal & business verification

You will be asked to provide details about your business and professional background to ensure compliance with regulations, such as the DSA. You can read more in our article Personal & business information verification.

  • Status selection: You must choose if you use Fiverr "Outside of my primary job" or "As part of my primary job."
  • Data privacy: If you are a trader, certain details (name, address, business email) will be visible to EU customers as required by law.

3. ID or business verification check

This is the final technical check to confirm your identity.

For individuals:

  • Provide your full name, email, and address exactly as they appear on your ID.
  • Select your ID country and document type.
  • Use your smartphone to take a clear photo of your ID and a selfie.

You can read more in our article Verify your identity.

For registered businesses:

  • Enter the country in which your business is registered.
  • Enter your business entity name, business email, business phone number, address, and business registration number. Check out our article Business Registration Number Information by Country for detailed guidance.
  • Take a picture of the required business documents to verify your company.
  • Required documents: Proof of business address (e.g., utility bill or lease).
  • Optional documents: Additional business documents to support verification (if available).

You can read more in our article Personal & business information verification.

4. Confirmation

You will receive an account notification and an email informing you if the verification was successful.

Once completed, you can check your verification status (which will be one of the following: required, in progress, or successfully verified) in the Personal & Business Info section of your account settings.

Troubleshooting & best practices

  • Follow these tips for a successful ID submission:
    • Use a physical, original ID that is current and not expired.
    • Ensure all four corners of the ID are visible in the frame.
    • Avoid glare by moving away from direct light sources.
    • Take your selfie in a well-lit area with a neutral background.
    • Don't use a saved image, screenshot, or photo taken from another screen.
  • If you are having trouble with phone verification, try the following:
    • Ensure you are not using a VOIP service like Google Voice; these are not supported.
    • If the Verify button is greyed out, ensure you are using a computer rather than the mobile app to initiate the step.
    • If you do not receive a code, wait 30–60 minutes before trying again.
    • Restart your device to refresh your network connection.
    • Ensure your phone is up to date and that no apps are blocking or filtering SMS/WhatsApp messages.
    • Try using the same SIM card on a different phone or test your phone with another SIM card.
  • If you are having trouble with ID verification, try the following:
    • Ensure the issuing country you select in the menu matches the country on your ID.
    • If your ID is in a different language, ensure you follow any specific instructions provided by Fiverr.
    • Confirm you are in the correct section under Account settings > Personal & business info.
  • If you are having trouble with business verification, try the following:
    • Having your business documents ready will speed up the process.
    • Make sure your name, address, and any business information exactly match your official documents. Discrepancies may lead to verification failure.
    • Enter the Business ID number in the correct format, as it was assigned to your business by the local government. If you're unsure, please consult your legal consultant.
    • When filling out forms, provide your details in English, exactly as they appear on your government-issued ID. Use documents with English text when available.
  • If you encounter a general technical issue, try the following:
    • Clear your browser's cache and cookies if you encounter a glitch. You can also try incognito mode or a different browser.
    • Disable any active VPNs, as the system may block verification for security reasons.
    • If an attempt fails, wait at least 6 hours before trying again to allow the system to reset.
    • Check your smartphone settings to ensure your mobile browser has permission to access the camera.

FAQs

  • It depends on the type of verification:
    • Business verification: If you are a trader, certain details (name, address, business email) will be visible to EU customers as required by law.
    • Phone verification: For clients, no. Your phone number is never displayed on Fiverr. For freelancers, your phone number is typically not displayed. It will only appear to an EU client viewing your profile, as required by the EU Digital Services Act (DSA).
    • ID verification: Your ID document and selfie are never made public. We retain these for 30 days and then only keep essential details required by law. If you are a trader under the DSA, certain business details will be visible to EU clients.
  • If you have not yet completed the identity verification process, your Gigs will not be shown in the Fiverr Catalog until you are fully verified. You will see a banner that indicates your profile is unlisted, and Gigs are not shown in the Fiverr Catalog until completed.
  • You must verify your identity with a valid government-issued ID from the list of documents available for your country. If you are a minor, please read more about our Minor's Policy.
  • The number of attempts allowed depends on the specific verification process you are completing:

    • Business verification: You have two attempts to successfully verify your business. Our system checks that your business name and address exactly match the information on your official documents.
    • Phone verification: You can attempt verification 3 times via text. Only one phone number can be verified every 24 hours.
    • ID verification: You are typically granted five individual attempts to verify your ID.

If you exhaust all available attempts for any of these processes, you can contact Customer Support for further assistance.

Ensuring your identity is verified helps keep your account and the entire Fiverr marketplace secure.
