How Fiverr works for clients

Fiverr is an online marketplace where you can find and hire talented freelancers for a wide range of digital services. Freelancers offer their services through Gigs, where you can browse their skills, packages, and reviews before placing an order. This article walks you through the full journey of using Fiverr, from creating your account to placing and completing your first order.

All users must be at least 18 years of age to use Fiverr. Users under 18 and at least 13 years of age are permitted to use the site only through an account owned by their parent or legal guardian with their appropriate permission.

Setting up your account

To get started, create a free account on Fiverr.com. Once registered, you can browse services, contact freelancers, and place orders right away.

With your account ready, you can start searching for the right freelancer.

Finding a freelancer

There are several ways to find the right freelancer or service on Fiverr.

  • Enter keywords in the search bar on the homepage and click Search. Fiverr suggests popular searches as you type to help refine your query.
  • Use the navigation bar to browse by category and subcategory. This is useful if you are exploring options rather than searching for something specific.
  • Once you see search results, use the filters to narrow them down. Available filters include:
    • Service options: Filter by language, subscription services, paid video consultations, and other service types.
    • Freelancer details: Filter by freelancer tier, availability, and spoken language.
    • Seller type: Filter to find an agency rather than an individual freelancer. Agencies are currently available in the Digital Marketing, Programming and Tech, Graphics & Design, and Video and Animation categories, with more categories being added over time.
    • Budget: Set a price range to match your project budget.
    • Delivery time: Filter by how quickly you need the work delivered.
  • You can also post a project brief to receive tailored offers from relevant freelancers. Fiverr uses AI to help you generate a professional brief based on your project goals.

Once you have found a freelancer you like, take a moment to review their profile before placing an order.

Understanding freelancer profiles

Before placing an order, review a freelancer's profile to make sure they are the right fit for your project.

  • Profile: Includes location, languages, response times, bio, skills, and certifications.
  • Packages: Most freelancers offer Basic, Standard, and Premium packages. Each package outlines what is included and at what price.
  • Reviews and ratings: Read feedback from other clients to understand the quality and reliability of a freelancer's work.

Freelancers are independent contractors, not Fiverr employees. They offer their services through Gigs on the platform. If you are hiring for long-term or ongoing work, some business accounts have access to worker classification tools to help assess contractor vs. employee status for compliance purposes.

Working with agencies

Alongside individual freelancers, you can also hire an agency on Fiverr. An agency provides professional services under one entity, bringing together diverse skills and experience to offer a broad range of services and solutions. Unlike a single freelancer, an agency can manage multiple high-scale projects and clients at the same time, giving you the ability to scale up as your needs grow.

How to identify an agency

Fiverr offers several ways to recognize and explore agencies:

  • Agency card: When you search or browse for a service, you may see an agency card in the listings. It is about twice the size of a regular Gig card and leads to the agency's page. You can also spot an agency quickly by the "We are" prefix in the provider's name.
  • Agency page: Each agency has a dedicated page with detailed information to help you make an informed decision, including insights into the agency's team, employees, values, expertise, and past projects.
  • Entry points: You can find agencies through dedicated entry points in the navigation bar and on category pages, which are built into the search and browsing experience.
  • Seller type filter: Use the Seller type filter in your search results to find an agency that aligns with your project requirements.

Benefits of working with an agency

Choosing an agency on Fiverr brings several advantages:

  • Access to a range of services under one entity and the ability to handle large-scale projects.
  • A vetting process: Agencies undergo a thorough vetting process to maintain service quality and foster a trustworthy environment.
  • The flexibility to choose: Agencies are an additional option, not a replacement. You can still work with the best individual freelancer for your needs whenever that is the better fit.
  • The option to book a meeting: Because agencies often work on larger projects, you can book a free video meeting to align before the project starts. We encourage you to communicate with the agency beforehand.

When you are ready to move forward, you can place your order directly from the Gig page or ask the freelancer to send you a custom offer.

Placing an order

Before you confirm, it helps to know that Fiverr adds a service fee at checkout, 5.5% on all orders, plus an additional $3.00 USD for orders under $100 USD. The fee applies to all payments within the order, including add-ons, Gig extras, and tips.

Request to order

On some Gigs, a freelancer may require you to send a Request to Order before you can place your order. This feature gives you the opportunity to discuss your project's specific requirements, confirm the right package, and align on details and timelines before committing.

Note: Request to Order is not available for all Gigs.

If you see a Request to Order button on a Gig, here is what to do:

  1. Click the Request to Order button on the Gig page.
  2. Write a message describing your project and attach any relevant files.
  3. Submit your request. You will receive a confirmation and be able to see the freelancer's average response time.
  4. Go to your Inbox to view the request and continue the conversation with the freelancer.
  5. If both parties agree to proceed, the freelancer may send you a Custom Offer to place your order.

Repeat clients may be able to place orders directly without sending a Request to Order, as may clients who have already received a Custom Offer from the freelancer.

How to place an order:

  1. Find the Gig you want and click on it.
  2. Select a package: Basic, Standard, or Premium. Alternatively, request a custom offer directly from the freelancer.
  3. Add any Gig extras if needed.
  4. Review the order total, including the service fee, then confirm your payment method and click Confirm & Pay.

Once your order is placed, the freelancer gets to work. Here is what to expect when they deliver.

Completing your order

When the freelancer delivers the work, you can review it and take action from your Orders page.

How to accept or request changes on a delivery:

  1. Go to your Orders section and open the relevant order.
  2. Find the delivery in the Delivery tab or by scrolling down the order page.
  3. Select one of the following options: accept the delivery, request revisions, or request more time.
  4. Optionally, rate your experience.

The order status updates automatically as you and the freelancer take action. You can track progress on the order page at any time.

Once you accept the delivery, the order is complete, and payment is released to the freelancer.

Payment release

Once you accept the delivery and the order is marked complete, the freelancer receives their earnings. If you do not take action for 72 hours after delivery, the order completes automatically based on Fiverr's order completion timeline.

If you need to cancel or request a refund: Refunds and cancellations

After your order is complete, you can share your experience by leaving a review.

Reviews & ratings

After an order is complete, you can leave a review for the freelancer. Reviews help other clients make informed decisions and give freelancers feedback on their work. Fiverr's review system is built on transparency and accountability, so your feedback matters.
