Using AI on Fiverr: Guidelines for freelancers and clients

As artificial intelligence continues to shape how we work, Fiverr allows its responsible use to help freelancers deliver better results and assist clients more effectively. AI tools are now a part of many professional workflows - from writing assistants to image generation, automation, and data analysis - and Fiverr supports these tools when they are used responsibly and in line with Fiverr’s standards.

This article outlines Fiverr’s guidelines on AI usage for both clients and freelancers, focusing on expectations, communication, and the authorized practices in accordance with Fiverr’s policies.

Fiverr's approach to AI integration

AI tools can enhance creativity, improve productivity, and streamline processes. Fiverr permits the use of AI across all service categories. Whether you're delivering a logo, writing content, analyzing data, or building a website, AI can be part of your toolkit, like any other professional tool.

AI use is encouraged, as long as it's:

  • Responsible and appropriate for the service being provided.
  • Compliant with laws and platform standards.
  • Used to support the freelancer's own skill and effort, not as a replacement for them, while delivering high-quality, customized work tailored to the client's needs.

Fiverr supports the innovative use of AI while maintaining standards that protect the trust, quality, and integrity of the marketplace. Misuse of AI that infringes on privacy, deceives others, or manipulates reality, regardless of intent, is not tolerated on the platform.

AI use expectations for freelancers

Freelancers using AI are expected to adhere to Fiverr's Community Standards on AI-generated Content, ensuring that their use of AI tools is ethical, legal, and transparent.

AI tools may be used to assist freelancers in completing their work, but they are not a substitute for freelancers' own skill and effort. Freelancers are fully accountable for the final work they deliver. Any AI-generated or AI-assisted work must be high-quality, original, and meaningfully refined and customized to the client's specific requirements. Generic, unmodified, or reused AI output does not meet Fiverr's quality standards.

Freelancers must also honor a client's explicit request for non-AI work. When a client specifies this preference, before or at the start of an order, freelancers are expected to disclose their intended workflow and align accordingly.

The role of communication: Set expectations early

For clients

If you do not want AI used in your order, it's essential to say so clearly, either before placing the order or immediately after. Freelancers do not necessarily disclose all the tools they use in their Gigs, so early communication ensures alignment.

For freelancers

You are encouraged to:

  • Ask about client preferences during the order discussion.
  • Clarify your workflow when needed.
  • Stay transparent and responsive, especially if AI use might affect the creative direction or output style.

Strong communication leads to better outcomes and fewer misunderstandings.

Prohibited AI uses: What's not allowed on Fiverr

  • Deceptive synthetic and manipulated media (Deepfakes): Creating or using AI-generated videos, images, or voices that mimic real individuals without their consent, particularly for deceptive or malicious purposes.
  • Unauthorized use of voice or likeness: Using someone's voice, image, or likeness without proper authorization or rights.
  • Fraudulent activities: Generating or editing content to falsify documents, identities, or affiliations.
  • Misrepresentation: Designing avatars, images, or content intended to mislead others about a person's true identity, role, or intent.
  • Harmful or inappropriate content: Producing AI-generated material that violates privacy, promotes violence, hate speech, or discrimination, or spreads misinformation.
  • Manipulating public perception: Using AI to create or alter images, videos, or content in a way that distorts reality or influences public opinion under false pretenses, especially in sensitive areas such as politics or current events.

The use of AI for these prohibited activities is strictly forbidden to ensure responsible, ethical, and legal use while maintaining trust, professionalism, and safety.

What happens if there's a dispute?

If a concern is raised about AI use after an order is delivered, Fiverr reviews the full context of the order rather than focusing on AI use alone. The following factors are taken into account:

  • Whether the client clearly communicated their expectations regarding AI use before or at the start of the order.
  • Whether the delivery is of good quality, accurate, free from clear mistakes or AI-generated hallucinations, and tailored to the client's specific needs, rather than appearing generic or templated.
  • Whether the delivery reflects the freelancer's own professional effort and meaningful input, rather than merely raw AI-generated output.
  • Whether both parties communicated professionally and responsively throughout the order.

If we identify a trust breach, including deception about how work was delivered, misrepresentation of AI usage, or failure to meet the platform's quality standards, the order may be cancelled, the client may receive a full refund, and the freelancer's account may be permanently suspended.

Our focus is on the overall service experience and the quality of the final delivery. The same standards apply to all work delivered on Fiverr, whether or not AI tools were used.
